1st Assistant Director - Hollyoaks
Contract: Permanent, full time
Location: Childwall, Liverpool
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and talented 1st Assistant Director to join the production team on our long-running television drama Hollyoaks on a full-time basis.
Working closely with the Editorial and Production teams, the 1st AD will play a pivotal role in delivering an efficient and well-organised shoot schedule while maintaining the creative energy that defines the show. Acting as a key communicator on set, you will manage day-to-day production activity and ensure clear coordination between the Director, cast, and crew, while maintaining a safe and productive working environment.
You will support the Director in realising their vision for the script, leading the production unit through pre-production and the shooting period. The role requires careful oversight of script and schedule changes, ensuring the production runs smoothly, efficiently, and safely.
As 1st AD, you will be the primary link between the shoot crew, artists, production team, and script office, ensuring all departments remain aligned throughout the shoot.
Key Responsibilities include:
Collaborate with Editorial and Production teams to create and maintain shoot schedules, typically working to a 10-day production block.
Read and break down scripts to identify production, editorial, and health & safety requirements.
Lead design, costume, and make-up meetings alongside the Director.
Attend and co-lead planning meetings and location recces, documenting and communicating key information and requirements to relevant departments.
Complete and maintain risk assessments, ensuring all health and safety considerations are addressed at both base and location, and liaise with the H&S Advisor regarding any updates.
Attend company Health & Safety committee meetings to represent floor activity alongside Production Managers.
Manage the shoot on set, clearly interpreting and communicating instructions between the Director, gallery, and floor, and coordinating with all departments and units.
Work with the Director to ensure the successful delivery of each shoot day.
Maintain a cohesive and disciplined production environment, ensuring company values and policies are upheld both on set and on location.
Provide First Aid support during filming where required.
Experience & Knowledge Required:
Strong understanding of television production workflows, including script and story processes.
Knowledge of health and safety practices within a television production environment.
Proven experience working in drama production.
Familiarity with television working time regulations, including children’s working hours and driving hours.
IOSH qualification
First Aid certification
Experience using Dzjinius (Genius) scheduling software
